 The back of the painting we have. It is not on canvas,
but a thick card board like material. The front of the
painting is textured. You can feel the design of the
painting. This photograph shows the stamp on the
back of the painting. There is also on the front of
the painting the letters N Y at lower left of painting,
and something else which is extremely hard to make
out due to it blending into the darker coloring of the
painting. I will also note here that when this painting
is viewed thru a magnifying glass, up closely, you can
see the N Y, as well as what looks like dots or pixels,
underneath the colors of the painting.
We are attempting to find out if this is an original
painting of Utrillo's, or a reproduction, and the
value of the painting whether it is an original or

We do know by our research at this point that the
painting is of a place called Le Lapin Agile. The
painting is very similar to the artists painting of the
Rue St. Vincent, and of the painting Le Lapin Agile.
But it's exact likeness was found online in researching,
and was at a well known auction site, the photograph
being exact in detail to this one that was listed there,
called Nimble Rabbit under the Snow,
by Maurice Utrillo, V.
As to our paintings authenticity we are not sure of
as yet. Future researching will reveal this importantly
needed information on this beautiful painting, before it
is placed for sell, whichever method we may choose in
the selling of it.
Researching on the famous French artist Maurice Utrillo
brought some interesting information on the artist.
As he was and undoubtly still is a well known and his
painting desirable as a collectible, we thought since
we have this painting, we would include some of the
information we found at various sites online in our
research to date. So we are including some url's
where information was found on this painting.
Utrillo, Maurice (1883-1955)
Maurice Utrillo, French painter, took to art in an
attempt to escape alcoholism at the age of 19.
Initially painted prolific number of somber landscapes
of the countryside around Montmagny near Paris
but his paintings brightened and adopted a less
somber tone after his return to Montmartre 3 years
later and created the first of many street scenes
composed of ordinary houses and churches.
Utrillo was later to choose Cathedrals as his main
subject.
UTRILLO, HIS LIFE
The son of Suzanne Valadon and of an unknown father,
Maurice Utrillo was born in Montmartre on
December 26th 1883. Working as a model for the artists
Puvis de Chavannes, Renoir and Toulouse-Lautrec,
Suzanne Valadon rapidly neglected her son and devoted
herself to painting instead.
The young Maurice was left in the care of his
grand-mother but coping with his loneliness and the
absence of his mother he soon became addicted to
drink. Already, at the age of 21 he suffered the first
symptoms of a deep mental disorder. From then on,
fits of explosive anger, scandals and internments in
lunatic asylums became his common lot during
many years.
Luckily, such mental illness resulted in an urge to
paint. Following the advice of a doctor, who was
also a close friend, Suzanne Valadon encouraged
her son to start up a career thinking that painting
could prove to be a useful therapy for him.
Nevertheless, she soon understood that he was
endowed with a real talent.
As early as 1926, Maurice Utrillo became famous
and his works were much in demand by collectors.
He married Lucie Pauwels in 1935 and settled in
the Paris suburb of Le Vésinet where he led a
peaceful life working daily until his death on
November 5th 1955.
UTRILLO, HIS CAREER...
Utrillo never adhered to the major artistic currents ,
the "Fauvist", "Cubist" or "Post-Impressionist"
movements, which emerged during this century.
Everything he wanted to signify was told in the
scenes he painted according to his own way.
Utrillo's landscape his not that of nature. Contrary
to the Impressionist painters he left little place to
water, grounds or to nature. Painting a sky was not
his major preoccupation. His landscapes are
simply invaded by buildings erected by human
hands. They are made of villages, suburbs and towns.
UNEVEN is for painters whose works are not equally
priced because of certain factors, notably an artist's
best period (the Blue period for Picasso being his best,
Van Gogh's worksproduced after 1886, Derain and
Vlaminck before 1910, Mondrian after 1911 being the
most expensive), not to mention works considered
today as more commercial than others.

Twentieth century French painter Maurice Utrillo works
at his canvas. Although he had no formal training,
Utrillo was one of the most popular Parisian artists
at the time of his death in 1955. He was noted for his
French. artists. painters. Parisian. 20th century.

Lapin Agile is not. Situated at No. 4 rue Saint-Vincent in
Montmartre, the Lapin Agile was a bohemian cabaret
owned by Aristide Bruant and leased by Frederic Gerard.
Originally called Au Rendez-Vous des Voleurs when it
opened in 1860 and later named Le Cabaret des Assassins,
it got the name it is best known by when painter
Andre Gill painted the establishment's famous sign,
a rabbit jumping out of a saucepan with a bottle of wine
in its hand.
It was renamed Le Lapin A. (for Andre) Gill. The name later
was corrupted into Le Lapin Agile. Pictures were hung on
the walls, including Picasso's famous "Harlequin. "
Short of cash, Gerard sold the painting for a mere
5,000 francs.
The Nimble Rabbit under snow.
At the beginning, the Nimble Rabbit was called the
Cabaret of the Assassins, it was held by the
"Berthe Mother" who had a culinary speciality: a very
good rabbit in gibelotte. It asked André Gill,
caricaturist 19 2nd century old, to paint a sign to
him. It made a rabbit, with a red hat on the head,
which jumped in a pan. When the establishment
was indicated one said: "go to Rabbit with Gill"
and from there, thereafter the Cabaret of Nimble Rabbit.

There are numerous sites online with various photographs
and information relating to this well known artist. I have
even seen some paintings, by Utrillo listed on ebay.
Of course there are reproductions, even fakes of some of
the paintings that were created by Utrillo, as you probably
are well aware of. But there is always the possibility of an
original being found, as this artists paintings could have
been found during the war and possibly purchased and
brought home or sent home while our men were doing
service over seas, during WWII, my father served in that
war.
So it is always, regardless of the outcome, whether it be
found to be an original, fake, or reproduction, of little or
no value, or of great value, a good thing to research
and authenticate a painting or other collectible treasure..!
Regardless of the outcome of the research on this painting
in our possession, it is truely a treasure, a lovely rendering
of a time past, in a beautifull quite snow covered street, as
well as sprinkling of snow on the roof tops, and fench posts
lined along quaint village stores, with just a few people
venturing along the way.
One thing for sure this painting is not among thousands
to be found, for in all our research of thousands of sites
online with any mention of Maurice Utrillo, only one
photograph of identical setting was found...! Wish us luck
in finding the information we need on this lovely work done
by such a wonderful, ( regardless of his history of drinking
problem ), done by Mr. Utrillo.....

We received an email from a visitor to our site, which also
was researching a painting much like this one, which they
had. We have also done some more researching and came
up with quite a bit more interesting information. I include
